THE FABRIC LIBRARY

A closer look at the material behind Chár. This library explores the origins, composition & characteristics of the fibres we use & the purpose each serves within our designs. We prioritise sourcing deadstock fabrics wherever possible, while selecting materials for their quality, function & relationship to each silhouette.

Our Approach to Materials

At Chár Atelier, material selection is an important part of our design process. We prioritise sourcing deadstock textiles, alongside natural, recycled & responsibly produced fibres wherever possible, considering both their environmental impact & suitability for each design. Every material is selected with intention, balancing quality, longevity & function. From the fluidity of a drape to the structure of a silhouette, we believe the fabric should serve the design while reflecting a considered approach to the resources we use.

Materials

Classification
Regenerated cellulosic fibre.
Origin
Derived from natural plant cellulose, commonly sourced from beechwood pulp.
Production
Wood-derived cellulose is dissolved & regenerated into exceptionally soft textile fibres, transforming a plant-based raw material into a fabric known for its smoothness and fluidity.
Characteristics
Exceptionally soft, breathable & smooth, modal is valued for its beautiful drape, moisture absorption and ability to move effortlessly with the body.
Environmental Considerations
Modal is derived from renewable plant-based cellulose & can biodegrade under suitable conditions. Responsibly sourced wood & carefully managed manufacturing processes can help reduce its environmental impact.

THE VALUE OF EXISTING MATERIALS

Understanding Deadstock

Deadstock refers to surplus fabric left unused from previous production, cancelled orders or excess inventory. At Chár, we prioritise using deadstock fabrics wherever possible, giving existing materials a new life rather than relying solely on newly manufactured textiles. By making use of fabrics already in circulation, we aim to reduce unnecessary waste and contribute to a more sustainable approach to fashion. As deadstock fabrics are often available in limited quantities, once a fabric is gone, it's unlikely to return. While our designs may be released again, they may not be available in the exact same fabric or colourway.
